Generations:
African-American Camp Meeting Traditions in South Carolina
.
Camp meetings have a rich and longstanding history in the United States. They take place each year among both African-American and Caucasian–Americans and offer an opportunity for people to come together under the arbor for spiritual renewal. For this documentary, I focused on four African-American camp meetings in South Carolina
There are 28 black and white images accompanied by text panels that provide the viewer with an introduction to camp participants, and information about the tradition.
I became fascinated with the whole concept of camp meetings after returning to the tradition as an adult. I suppose the amazement in all of this for me was initially stepping foot on the grounds that I frequented as a young child. I felt as if I had stepped back in time and automatically began to think about the people who once walked around the grounds, my ancestors.
